How to Check Your eSIM Data Usage on iPhone and Android
Monitor how much data your travel eSIM has used in real time. Step-by-step guide for iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel — plus tips to avoid running out.
Keeping an eye on your data usage is easy — your phone tracks it natively. The key is making sure you reset the counter at the start of your trip, so you're measuring only eSIM usage and not leftover figures from home.
Check usage on iPhone
Go to Settings → Cellular
Scroll down to see a list of apps with their data usage. This shows total data since the counter was last reset.
Scroll to the bottom
At the bottom, you'll see 'Current Period' totals — this is your overall mobile data use.
Reset the counter at trip start
Tap 'Reset Statistics' at the bottom. Do this the moment you activate your eSIM abroad. From then on, the counter shows exactly how much eSIM data you've used.
Select your eSIM
If you have multiple lines, tap the eSIM plan name under 'Cellular Data' to see its specific usage.
iPhone tip
iOS doesn't reset usage data automatically each billing period like Android. Always reset manually when you start a new eSIM plan.
Check usage on Samsung Galaxy
Open Settings → Connections → Data Usage
You'll see a graph showing data use over time.
Select the eSIM line
Tap the dropdown at the top and choose your Vyroam eSIM (by name or line number).
Set a billing cycle start date
Set the cycle start to your trip start date. The graph will then show usage only from that date.
Set a data limit warning
Tap 'Set data limit' and enter your plan's allowance. You'll get a notification when you're running low.
Check usage on Google Pixel
Open Settings → Network & internet → Internet
Tap your eSIM line, then 'App data usage'.
View usage by app
See which apps are using the most data. You can restrict background data per app here.
Set a data warning
Go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → your eSIM → Data warning & limit. Set the warning to match your plan size.
Data management tips
- Download offline maps (Google Maps, Maps.me) before you travel — navigation uses almost no data when maps are cached
- Turn off auto-play videos in social media apps (Instagram, TikTok, X) — they're the biggest silent data drain
- Disable background app refresh for apps you don't need while travelling
- Use hotel/café Wi-Fi for large downloads, streaming, and video calls
- A 10-minute YouTube video at standard quality uses roughly 150–200MB
