eSIM for Southeast Asia: Multi-Country Travel Guide

Backpacking or island-hopping across Southeast Asia? Here's how to stay connected across Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and more — with one eSIM or country plans.

5 min read

Southeast Asia is one of the world's most popular travel regions — and mobile connectivity has improved dramatically across the region. Major cities like Bangkok, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur, and Jakarta have excellent 4G coverage. Smaller islands and rural areas vary, but connectivity is sufficient for most traveller needs.

Countries covered

Vyroam provides eSIM plans for the following Southeast Asian destinations:

  • Thailand
  • Vietnam
  • Indonesia (including Bali)
  • Malaysia

Please note

Vyroam does not currently offer eSIM plans for Myanmar. If your itinerary includes Myanmar, a local SIM purchased on arrival will be required for that leg of the trip.

Regional plan vs country plans

For Southeast Asia travel, you have two main options:

  • Regional plan — covers multiple countries under a single eSIM. Convenient for fast-moving itineraries. Typically offers fewer GB per dollar than country plans, and may rely on roaming within each country rather than local network priority.
  • Individual country plans — buy a plan for each country. More data for the money, local network priority. Requires installing a new plan when you cross each border (takes about 2 minutes over Wi-Fi at your hotel).

For trips covering 2–3 countries over 3+ weeks, individual plans typically offer better value. For a rapid tour hitting 5 countries in 2 weeks, the convenience of a regional plan may outweigh the cost difference.

Practical tips for Southeast Asia

  • Download offline maps for each country before you arrive — especially useful for Vietnam and Cambodia where some rural roads aren't well-mapped online
  • In Singapore and Malaysia, Grab is the dominant ride-hailing app — have it set up and data-connected before you need a taxi
  • In Thailand, Grab works in major cities; tuk-tuk drivers and some taxi drivers prefer cash in smaller towns
  • Many cafés and accommodation in tourist areas have Wi-Fi — use it for large data tasks and save eSIM data for on-the-go use
  • If hopping between islands by ferry, your eSIM will work on the ferry (as long as you're within sight of land and a tower) but expect gaps mid-crossing
  • Vietnam's traffic apps include Grab and also local apps like be — both require data to function
