Managing your eSIM

Can I Use Hotspot (Tethering) with a Travel eSIM?

Yes — most travel eSIM plans support tethering. Here's how to enable hotspot on iPhone and Android, and how to avoid burning through your data allowance.

3 min read

Tethering means using your phone's mobile data connection as a Wi-Fi hotspot for other devices — a laptop, tablet, or a travel companion's phone. Most Vyroam eSIM plans support this, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

Short answer

Yes, tethering works with travel eSIM plans. Check your plan's terms at purchase — the vast majority allow it. When you tether, the data used by connected devices counts against your eSIM plan's allowance, so a tethered laptop will drain your data significantly faster than a phone alone.

Check your plan

Vyroam plan pages clearly indicate whether tethering is supported. Look for 'Hotspot' in the plan features at checkout.

Enable hotspot on iPhone

1

Open Settings → Personal Hotspot

Alternatively, go to Settings → Cellular → Personal Hotspot.

2

Make sure the eSIM is selected as the data line

Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data and confirm your Vyroam eSIM is selected.

3

Toggle 'Allow Others to Join' on

Your Wi-Fi hotspot is now live. Note the Wi-Fi password shown on screen.

4

Connect other devices

On the laptop or tablet, search for Wi-Fi networks and connect using the password shown.

Enable hotspot on Android (Samsung / Pixel)

1

Open Settings → Connections (or Network & Internet)

Tap Mobile Hotspot and Tethering, or search 'Hotspot' in Settings.

2

Tap Mobile Hotspot

Enable the toggle. Set a network name and password if prompted.

3

Confirm data source

Make sure your Vyroam eSIM is set as the active data SIM in SIM Manager settings.

4

Connect other devices

Search for the hotspot name on other devices and connect using your password.

Data-saving tips when tethering

  • Tethering a laptop can use 500MB–2GB per hour depending on activity — choose a larger plan if you plan to tether regularly
  • Disable auto-updates on connected laptops before tethering — Windows and macOS love to download updates on new connections
  • Use the hotspot for browsing and messaging, not streaming video — a 10-minute video can use 500MB+
  • Set a data limit on your phone if available (Android) to get an alert before your allowance runs out
