USA eSIM Guide for International Travellers: Plans and Setup
How to obtain mobile data in the USA as an international visitor. Coverage across T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon networks, plan sizes for different trip types, and setup tips.
The United States is vast and its mobile coverage varies enormously — from world-class 5G in New York and Los Angeles to no signal at all in remote national parks. Getting an eSIM before you fly is the most convenient option for most international visitors.
US mobile coverage overview
The US has three dominant national carriers: T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. T-Mobile has the widest overall coverage map, particularly in suburban and rural areas. Verizon historically leads in rural coverage and building penetration. AT&T is strongest along coasts and major cities.
| Location type | Coverage quality |
|---|---|
| NYC, LA, Chicago, Miami | Exceptional — 5G widespread |
| Mid-size cities (Denver, Nashville, Austin) | Very good — 4G/5G throughout |
| Suburban areas | Good — consistent 4G |
| Interstate highways | Good — 4G on most major routes |
| National parks (main areas) | Fair — varies widely by park |
| Rural areas | Variable — 3G/4G coverage patchy |
| Remote wilderness | Limited or none |
National parks note
Mobile coverage in national parks is very limited inside park boundaries. Download offline maps (Google Maps, All Trails) before you enter. Rangers and visitor centres are your best resource once inside.
Which plan size should you choose
| Trip type | Recommended data |
|---|---|
| Short city visit (3–5 days) | 3–5GB |
| 1-week multi-city trip | 5–10GB |
| 2-week road trip | 10–20GB (more if navigating heavily) |
| 1 month | 20–30GB |
| Road trip through remote areas | Buy a larger plan — GPS uses more data in areas with poor coverage |
Airport activation
Major US airports (JFK, LAX, ORD, MIA, DFW) have immediate 4G coverage on arrival. Install your eSIM before you fly and it activates automatically when you land. Customs and immigration lines can be long — having navigation and rideshare apps (Lyft, Uber) ready as you step out saves significant time.
Tips by destination
- New York City — Coverage is excellent. Subway stations now have 4G on most lines thanks to a major infrastructure upgrade. Install before you fly.
- Los Angeles — 4G/5G throughout the city. Traffic apps (Waze, Google Maps) are essential — download offline maps for the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
- Las Vegas — Excellent coverage on the Strip and downtown. Coverage on the drive to/from Las Vegas across the Mojave can be very patchy.
- Hawaii — Good coverage on Oahu (Honolulu). Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island have good coverage in coastal towns; remote and mountainous areas are limited.
- Alaska — Coverage is primarily around Anchorage and major towns. Remote wilderness has no coverage. Download offline maps before any backcountry travel.
- Road trips — US interstates generally have reasonable 4G but gaps appear in Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, and rural stretches. A larger plan (15–20GB) is recommended.
