'Unable to Activate eSIM' Error — How to Solve It

Getting an 'Unable to Activate eSIM' or 'Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change' error? Here's what causes it and how to fix it step by step.

3 min read

The 'Unable to Activate eSIM' error appears when the eSIM installation process fails partway through. It's almost always caused by one of three things: a carrier lock, a connectivity issue during installation, or a QR code that's been used before.

Common causes

  • Phone is carrier-locked and doesn't accept third-party eSIM plans
  • Wi-Fi connection dropped during installation
  • QR code was already activated on this or another device
  • iOS or Android version is outdated
  • Device date/time is incorrect (interferes with certificate verification)

Fixes to try (in order)

1

Check your Wi-Fi connection

A dropped connection mid-installation is the most common cause. Make sure you're on a stable Wi-Fi network — not a public hotspot with a login page. Try your home network if possible.

2

Restart your phone

Turn fully off and back on. Then try the installation again.

3

Check your device date and time

iPhone: Settings → General → Date & Time → Set Automatically → On. Android: Settings → General Management → Date and Time → Automatic date and time → On.

4

Update iOS or Android

Outdated system software can cause eSIM installation failures. Go to Settings → Software Update and install any pending updates.

5

Try the manual entry method

If QR scanning keeps failing, use the manual code entry method instead. Your confirmation email contains the SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code for manual installation.

6

Check for carrier lock

Go to Settings → General → About (iPhone). If Carrier Lock shows a carrier name, your device is locked. Contact your home carrier to unlock it.

iPhone-specific

If you see 'Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change', this is the same underlying issue with a different message. The fixes above apply equally.

If your phone is carrier-locked

A carrier-locked phone is the most common cause of repeated activation failures. Contact your home carrier and request an unlock — most carriers do this for free after 12 months. Once unlocked, retry the eSIM installation.
