Managing your eSIM

What Happens When My eSIM Data Runs Out?

Running out of data mid-trip can feel stressful, but it's straightforward to handle. Here's exactly what happens when your eSIM plan runs out — and your options for staying connected.

3 min read

Unlike carrier roaming — where running out of data can trigger expensive pay-as-you-go charges — a Vyroam travel eSIM simply stops when your allowance is used. There are no automatic overage charges, no surprise additions to your bill.

What happens when data runs out

When your eSIM data allowance is fully used:

  • Mobile data on that eSIM stops working — websites won't load, apps won't refresh
  • Your phone signal stays active — you can still make and receive calls on your home SIM
  • No overage charges — you won't be billed anything extra automatically
  • The eSIM profile stays on your phone — you haven't lost access to the account, just the data
  • Some plans slow to a lower speed (throttled) rather than cutting off — check your plan description

No surprise bills

Vyroam eSIM plans are prepaid and capped. When the data is gone, the data is gone — nothing more is charged. This is fundamentally different from carrier roaming, which can continue billing at pay-as-you-go rates.

How to tell you're running low

Keep an eye on your data usage before it runs out:

  • iPhone: Settings → Cellular → your eSIM label → check Current Period data usage
  • Android (Samsung): Settings → Connections → Data Usage → select your eSIM
  • Android (Pixel): Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → your eSIM → App data usage
  • Vyroam account: sign in and go to My eSIM — some plans show remaining data

Your options when data runs out

  • Buy a new plan — purchase another eSIM plan for the same destination on Vyroam. Install it in Settings → Add eSIM → Scan QR code. Your new plan activates immediately.
  • Switch to hotel or café Wi-Fi — for stationary tasks (email, browsing), this may be all you need
  • Use your home SIM — if your carrier has a roaming day pass, this is a short-term fallback for urgent connectivity needs
  • Enable hotspot from a travel companion's phone — if they have data remaining

How to avoid running out

  • Download offline maps (Google Maps, Maps.me) at your accommodation — navigation uses no mobile data offline
  • Set a data usage warning on your phone (Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data → Data Warning) at around 80% of your plan size
  • Download playlists, podcasts, and offline content over hotel Wi-Fi to avoid streaming on mobile data
  • Disable automatic app updates and cloud backups over mobile data
  • If you're planning a data-heavy trip (lots of navigation, streaming, video calls), buy a larger plan — going bigger is cheaper than buying a second plan mid-trip
