When Should I Buy My Travel eSIM?
Buy too early and you worry about expiry. Buy at the airport and you waste time. Here's exactly when to buy your travel eSIM for a stress-free trip.
One of the most common questions new eSIM users ask is: how early is too early? The answer is simpler than you think — buy whenever you're ready, install it at home, and don't worry about it until you land.
The short answer
Buy your eSIM any time before you travel — ideally a day or two before departure. Install it at home over Wi-Fi. The plan only starts counting down once your phone connects to a network at your destination. You won't lose a single day of data sitting in an airport lounge.
How eSIM activation works
Most travel eSIM plans use 'first use' activation. The validity countdown starts when your phone first connects to a local network abroad — not when you scan the QR code.
When to buy
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Planning well in advance | Buy any time — plans are delivered instantly to your email |
| Day before your flight | Perfect timing — install at home tonight over Wi-Fi |
| Morning of your flight | Still fine — install before you head to the airport |
| At the airport | Works, but you need Wi-Fi to install — find a hotspot first |
| Already abroad | Buy and install immediately — use airport or hotel Wi-Fi |
When to activate
Installing the eSIM (scanning the QR code) and activating the plan are two different things. You install at home. Activation happens automatically when you turn off airplane mode after landing.
Buy and install at home
Scan the QR code from your confirmation email while connected to Wi-Fi. The eSIM is now stored on your phone but not yet using data.
Set as data line
In your phone settings, set the new eSIM as your mobile data source. Leave data roaming enabled on the eSIM.
Board your flight on airplane mode
Keep airplane mode on during the flight as normal.
Land and connect
Turn off airplane mode. Your phone connects to a local network and your plan activates automatically. You're online.
Does the eSIM expire before I use it?
The QR code from your purchase email does not expire — you can install it weeks or months later. Once installed on your phone, the eSIM itself sits dormant until first use. The plan's validity period (e.g. 7 days, 30 days) only starts counting when you first connect at your destination.
There is one exception: some plans have a hard expiry from the date of purchase, regardless of activation. Always check the plan details at checkout. Vyroam plans clearly show both the data allowance and the validity period.
