eSIM for Australia: Complete Traveller's Guide

Australia has excellent mobile coverage in cities but large areas of limited service inland. Here's everything you need to know about using a travel eSIM in Australia — coverage, costs, and setup.

4 min read

Australia is a well-connected country for travellers in major cities — Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide all have strong 4G and growing 5G coverage. The challenge comes when venturing into the outback, national parks, or regional areas, where coverage can be sparse regardless of which SIM you use.

Mobile coverage in Australia

Australia's mobile networks provide good coverage along the main highway routes and in coastal towns popular with tourists. Key points:

  • Major cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra): excellent 4G/5G coverage
  • Coastal regions and tourist towns: good coverage
  • The Great Ocean Road, Blue Mountains, Cairns, Gold Coast: solid coverage in most areas
  • Outback, regional Queensland, Northern Territory away from main routes: limited or no coverage
  • Uluru / Ayers Rock: limited coverage — the resort area has some signal, but surrounding desert does not

Planning remote travel in Australia?

If you're doing serious outback travel or multi-day hikes in remote national parks, mobile data won't be reliable regardless of your plan. Consider a satellite communicator for safety in addition to a travel eSIM for city and regional use.

Which plan to buy

Australia is a large country and travellers typically spend more time here than in smaller destinations. Consider:

  • Short trip (1–2 weeks, mostly cities): 5–10GB for 15 or 30 days
  • Longer trip (3–4 weeks, cities + regional): 10–20GB for 30 days
  • East Coast road trip (Sydney to Cairns): 15GB+ for 30 days — coverage is generally good along the Pacific Highway
  • Working holiday: 20GB+ with 30-day validity, renewed monthly

How to set up your eSIM for Australia

1

Buy your plan before you fly

Purchase your Australia eSIM plan from Vyroam before departure. You'll receive a QR code by email immediately.

2

Install at home over Wi-Fi

Open Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or SIM Manager (Android) → Add eSIM → Scan QR code. Takes about 2 minutes. Don't do this at the airport — home Wi-Fi is more reliable.

3

Set as data source

In SIM settings, set the eSIM as your mobile data source. Leave data roaming enabled on the eSIM. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.

4

Land and connect

When you land in Australia and turn off airplane mode, your phone connects to a local network. Your plan activates automatically — you're online.

Australia-specific tips

  • Download offline maps before leaving your accommodation — Google Maps and Maps.me both work well offline in Australia
  • Australia's networks are excellent in cities but 4G speeds may drop to 3G in some regional areas — still usable for navigation and messaging
  • If you're hiring a car for a long drive, download the route offline before you leave the city
  • Transport apps you'll use regularly: opal.com.au (Sydney), myki (Melbourne), TransLink (Brisbane/SEQ) — all work with mobile data
