Thailand eSIM Guide 2026: Stay Connected in Bangkok, Phuket & Beyond
Everything you need to know about using an eSIM in Thailand — coverage, plan sizes, when to activate, and tips for Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and the islands.
Thailand has excellent mobile infrastructure for a major travel destination. 4G LTE coverage is widespread in cities and tourist areas, and 5G is expanding rapidly in Bangkok and Phuket. For most travellers, an eSIM is the easiest and most affordable way to stay connected throughout Thailand.
eSIM coverage in Thailand
Thailand's three major network operators — AIS, DTAC (now True Move H following a merger), and True Move H — provide solid 4G coverage across the country. Cities, resort areas, national parks, and major transport routes are consistently well-covered.
| Area | Coverage quality |
|---|---|
| Bangkok | Excellent — 4G/5G everywhere |
| Phuket | Excellent — 4G throughout the island |
| Chiang Mai | Very good — 4G in city and surrounding areas |
| Koh Samui | Good — 4G across the island |
| Koh Phangan | Good — 4G in main towns, patchy in jungles |
| Koh Tao | Fair — 4G in town, limited on hillsides |
| Pai / Mae Hong Son | Limited — 3G/4G intermittent in mountain areas |
| National parks | Variable — 4G at park entrances, limited deeper in |
Which plan size to choose
Thailand is a data-friendly destination — apps like Google Maps, Grab (rideshare), LINE, and Bolt are essential for getting around. Here's a rough guide:
| Trip length | Recommended data | Usage type |
|---|---|---|
| 3–5 days | 3–5GB | Maps, messaging, light browsing |
| 1 week | 5–8GB | Typical tourist use including social media |
| 2 weeks | 10–15GB | Regular use with some video |
| 1 month | 20–30GB | Extended stay, working, streaming |
Download offline maps
Download Google Maps or Maps.me offline for Bangkok and your destination regions before you travel. Navigation uses minimal data when maps are cached — useful in areas with limited coverage.
When to activate
Install your eSIM at home before you fly. Your plan activates automatically when your phone connects to a Thai network after landing at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang Airport. Both airports have excellent 4G coverage throughout arrivals, so you'll be connected before you reach the taxi queue.
Tips for specific destinations
- Bangkok — Coverage is excellent everywhere, including the BTS Skytrain, MRT Metro, and river boats. Use Grab for taxis — you'll need consistent 4G.
- Phuket — Strong 4G throughout. Patong, Kata, and Karon beaches all have reliable coverage. Airport arrival is seamless.
- Chiang Mai — City coverage is very good. Mountain day trips (Doi Inthanon, Doi Suthep) get patchy at altitude but town coverage is fine.
- Islands — Koh Samui and Koh Phangan have decent coverage. Koh Tao is fair but small. Very remote islands may have limited or no coverage.
- Train travel — The overnight trains between Bangkok and Chiang Mai or Bangkok and the south have intermittent coverage, particularly at night. Download entertainment before boarding.
