Bali & Indonesia eSIM Guide: How to Get Data on Your Trip

How to stay connected in Bali, Lombok, and the Gili Islands with an eSIM. Coverage across Ubud, Seminyak, and Nusa Penida — plus tips for island-hopping.

4 min read

Bali has improved its mobile infrastructure significantly in recent years. 4G LTE coverage is now solid across most of the island's tourist areas, though some rural and mountainous zones remain patchy. An eSIM is the most convenient option for most visitors — no SIM kiosk queue at the airport, and it's ready before you land.

Coverage in Bali and Indonesia

Indonesia's primary carriers are Telkomsel (the largest), Indosat, and XL Axiata. Telkomsel offers the widest national coverage and is the partner network for most travel eSIM plans.

Which plan size to choose

Island hopping (2+ islands)10–15GB — more time in limited-coverage areas

Download offline maps

Download Google Maps offline for Bali, Nusa Penida, and Lombok before you travel. Maps in remote areas and on smaller islands are often needed exactly when 4G coverage is poor.

Arriving at Ngurah Rai International Airport

Ngurah Rai (DPS) airport has 4G coverage in the arrivals hall. Your eSIM activates automatically when you turn off airplane mode after landing. The airport has a free Wi-Fi network if you need to troubleshoot installation, but most visitors will be connected within seconds of landing.

Gojek and Grab (both work in Bali) require a working internet connection to book rides from the airport. Having your eSIM activated before you reach the taxi area saves time and confusion.

Other Indonesian islands

  • Lombok — Coverage in Mataram and Senggigi is good. The Rinjani volcano area has limited coverage above lower camps.
  • Nusa Penida — 4G in Sampalan (main town), weaker on the south coast cliffs and at Kelingking Beach. Download offline maps for the island.
  • Gili Islands — Gili Trawangan has reasonable 4G. Gili Meno and Gili Air are more limited. No motorised vehicles on the Gilis means you navigate on foot or by horse cart — offline maps help.
  • Komodo / Flores — Coverage in Labuan Bajo is good. On the boat to Komodo Island, coverage is very limited. Download content before departing.
