The United States is vast and its mobile coverage varies enormously — from world-class 5G in New York and Los Angeles to no signal at all in remote national parks. Getting an eSIM before you fly is the most convenient option for most international visitors.
US mobile coverage overview
The US has three dominant national carriers: T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. T-Mobile has the widest overall coverage map, particularly in suburban and rural areas. Verizon historically leads in rural coverage and building penetration. AT&T is strongest along coasts and major cities.

National parks note
Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, and many other national parks have very limited cell coverage inside park boundaries. Download offline maps (Google Maps, All Trails) before you enter. Rangers and visitor centres are your best resource once inside.

Tips by destination
- New York City — Coverage is excellent. Subway stations now have 4G on most lines thanks to a major infrastructure upgrade. Install before you fly.
- Los Angeles — 4G/5G throughout the city. Traffic apps (Waze, Google Maps) are essential — download offline maps for the LA metro area.
- Las Vegas — Excellent coverage on the Strip and downtown. Coverage on the drive to/from Las Vegas across the Mojave can be very patchy.
- Hawaii — Good coverage on Oahu (Honolulu). Maui, Kauai, and Big Island have good coverage in coastal towns; remote and mountainous areas are limited.
- Alaska — Coverage is primarily around Anchorage and major towns. Remote wilderness has no coverage. Download offline maps before any backcountry travel.
- Road trips — US interstates generally have decent 4G but gaps appear in Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, and rural stretches. A larger plan (15–20GB) is recommended.
