eSIM Connecting to Wrong Network — How to Fix It

If your eSIM is connecting to a network your plan doesn't support, you'll have no data or very slow speeds. Here's how to manually select the right network.

3 min read

When you arrive at your destination, your phone automatically scans for available networks and connects to the strongest one. Usually this works perfectly. Occasionally, it latches onto a network that your eSIM plan doesn't have an agreement with — resulting in no data or throttled speeds.

Why this happens

Travel eSIM plans route through specific network partners in each country. If your phone connects to a different operator than the one your plan partners with, the connection won't work. This is rare but does happen, particularly in countries with many competing networks or in border regions where signals from neighbouring countries bleed in.

Manual network selection — iPhone

1

Open Settings → Cellular

Tap your Vyroam eSIM line.

2

Tap Network Selection

Turn off 'Automatic'. Your phone scans for all available networks.

3

Select a different network

Try each available network. A working connection will load a web page within a few seconds. If one fails, go back and try the next.

4

Re-enable Automatic once found

Once you find a working network, you can leave it on manual for the trip, or re-enable Automatic and hope it stays on the right one.

Manual network selection — Android

1

Samsung: Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Network operators

Turn off 'Select automatically'. Tap 'Search networks'.

2

Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → your eSIM → Automatically select network → Off

Tap the search icon to scan for networks.

3

Select each available network and test

Try opening a website. If it loads, you're on the right network. If not, go back and try another.

Common fix

In most countries, switching from Automatic to Manual, selecting the primary national operator (often the one with the country's name or 'Telekom' in the title), and testing is enough to resolve the issue.

Carrier settings update

On iPhone, an outdated carrier settings profile can cause network selection issues. Check: Settings → General → About. If a carrier update is available, a prompt appears. Tap Update to install it.
