Managing your eSIM

What Happens to Unused eSIM Data When My Plan Expires?

Unused data disappears when your plan expires — there's no rollover. Here's how plan validity works, and how to choose the right plan size to minimise waste.

Travel eSIM plans have two limits: a data allowance and a validity period. When either runs out, your connection stops. Unused data doesn't roll over to a new plan — it's simply gone.

What happens to unused data?

When your plan's validity period ends, any remaining data allowance expires unused. For example, if you buy a 10GB/30-day plan and only use 4GB over 30 days, the remaining 6GB disappears on day 30. There are no refunds for unused data and no rollover to a new purchase.

This is standard across all travel eSIM plans — it's not unique to Vyroam. It's how mobile data plans work, both locally and for travel.

Validity vs data allowance — what runs out first?

Choosing the right plan size

A little planning saves money and frustration. Here's a rough guide to daily data use for a typical traveller:

Usage typeApprox. daily use
Maps, messaging, light browsing100–200MB/day
Social media, occasional video300–600MB/day
Video calls, streaming, hotspot1–2GB+/day
Light backpacker (maps + WhatsApp)50–100MB/day

For a 7-day trip with moderate use, a 3–5GB plan is usually comfortable. For two weeks with regular use, 8–15GB. If you plan to tether a laptop, add at least 2–3GB per day of laptop use.

Buy slightly bigger

It's better to have 1–2GB left over than to run out on day 5 of a 7-day trip. The price difference between a 5GB and 8GB plan is often small.
